10 Things to Quickly Declutter in the Living Room

1. Old Magazines, Catalogs, and Newspapers

Take a look around and recycle any paper media you have already read or don’t plan to read. Magazines, catalogs, and junk mail can pile up quickly, creating visual clutter. If you haven’t read them in a month, you likely aren’t going to read them in the future.

For magazines and newspapers, consider switching to digital subscriptions to reduce the paper coming into your home.

2. Old or Worn-out Throw Pillows

Assess your pillow situation. Throw pillows make a room feel cozy and add some color to your decor, but I have learned from experience, if you have too many pillows they just end up on the floor (especially if you have kids!) making the room look cluttered. Remove any pillows that are past their prime or have lost their shape.

3. DVDs or CDs you No Longer Use

We are officially in the age of streaming. If you still have a collection of DVDs or CDs (maybe even VHS tapes?!) that aren’t being used, these can be donated or sold. If you have old home movies on VHS tapes, find a service to convert them to digital so you can view them for years to come.

4. Old Cords and Cables

Do you have a pile of old cables and charging cords sitting around? Go through your cords and see if there are any that can be removed. Most electronics you buy come with their own cables, so no need to hold on to extras as spares. For cables that you need to hold onto, consider a cord organizer box to avoid a tangled mess.

5. Unused Toys

If your kids keep their toys in the living room, go through them and remove any that don’t get played with or are broken or missing pieces. It’s easy for the living room to be overrun by toys, but by purging the extra toys, you can keep the area tidy.

6. Old Board Games or Puzzles

Get rid of any games you no longer play or are missing pieces. If you have puzzles that you are never going to do, now is a great time to declutter them. I’m not just talking about kid’s games and puzzles, check your own collection too.  Nursing homes love donations of puzzles and games

7. Old or Broken Electronics

Remove any old or broken electronic devices that aren’t being used, including extra remote controls. If you have a CD player in your media cabinet, but you stream all of your music on Alexa, you don’t need the CD player taking up valuable space. Maybe you have a drawer of old streaming sticks that you no longer use because you have a smart TV. This is the perfect time to declutter those things.

8. Books

Whether you keep books on a bookshelf in the living room or laying out on a coffee table, take a look at what you have. If there are any that you are done reading and won’t read again, consider getting rid of them. I’m not saying get rid of your entire book collection, but make sure what you have is serving you and your space.

9. Knick-Knacks and Decor

Evaluate the decor you have in your living room. Remove anything that is outdated or that you don’t love. Extra knick-knacks collect dust and make the room appear more cluttered. Consider things like wall art, vases, candles, figurines, picture frames, and other accessories in the room.

10. Hobby or Craft Items

Many people work on hobbies in their living rooms. If you have supplies or equipment for your hobby such as knitting, photography, painting, beads, etc, go through your collection and remove anything that you don’t need regularly.

If you have somewhere else to store your supplies, remove them from the living room and just keep the things you need on a regular basis. Use a basket or a bin to contain the items you need regularly to keep the area tidy.

Think of Your Dream Living Room Space

As you declutter your living room, remember your why and what you want for the space. Think about how you want the room to make you feel. You don’t need to remove everything or make it look like no one lives there, but removing excess items from your living space can help create a comfortable and inviting room in your home to enjoy your family and guests.
