Supplies to Declutter the Bathroom
Before you get started, here are a few supplies you will want to have on hand.
- Trash Bag – Make it easy to toss things you want to get rid of.
- Donation Box – Have a place to collect items that you can donate.
- Bin or box for things that don’t belong in the bathroom. – I don’t want you to get distracted by running things all over the house. You can put things where they belong after you are done with the decluttering task.
- Wipes or Cleaning cloth – Even though we aren’t focused on cleaning right now; if you declutter an area on your bathroom counter or in a drawer, you can wipe it down quickly with a cleaning cloth.
10 Things to Declutter in the Bathroom in Less Than 10 Minutes Each
1. Old Cosmetics, Makeup, and Toiletries
If you have any cosmetic or toiletry items that you haven’t used in a while, they can go in the trash. Not only are they taking up valuable real estate in your bathroom, but a lot of makeup products can also end up with bacteria you don’t want on your skin.
Most products will have an expiration date on the container. If you see a symbol like the one below, that indicates how many months a product is good for. It’s so easy for products to stay in our bathrooms long past their prime!

2. Expired Medicine
Like cosmetics and toiletries, medication expiration dates can sneak up on us. Check the dates of any medicine and toss any that are expired. Refer to this site for what you should know about safely disposing of drugs. Depending on the type of medication, you may need to use a drug take-back program.
3. Empty or almost-empty containers
I’m guilty of watering down shampoo to get the last drops out….but then I keep the bottle in the shower even though I switch to a new bottle. I think it’s because when I’m getting out of the shower, I’m not thinking about taking the trash with me. So this is your reminder to go collect your empty bottles in the shower or anywhere else in the bathroom.
4. Expired Sunscreen
Sunscreen is another product that often expires before it gets used up. Usually, it’s only good for a year, so toss the old stuff. You don’t want to end up burned because you used old sunscreen!
5. Old towels and washcloths
If you have any worn out, stained, or unused towels and washcloths in your bathroom or linen closet, donate, toss, or recycle them. Even towels that are way past their prime are welcomed by animal shelters. Many towns also have textile recycling bins.

6. Dried-out Nail Polish
Check your nail polish collection. Toss any that are dried out or no longer usable.
7. Sample/Travel-Sized Products
If you bring home hotel shampoo every time you travel, you might have quite the collection. It’s time to use the samples or get rid of them. Unused travel-sized toiletries can be donated to shelters.
8. Broken or unused electric tools
Go through your electronic items, like hair dryers, curling irons, and electric razors. If any are unused, donate them. If they are broken, toss them.

9. Old Cleaning Products
Check your cleaning supplies for anything you no longer use.
10. Hair Accessories
Go through your hair accessories and get rid of anything that you no longer use (or have never used!) or that is outdated.
Bonus Decluttering Idea – Discard extra packaging material
Extra boxes and bags of items like q-tips or cotton balls can make a bathroom look more cluttered. You can use containers to hold these items to make them more tidy than the plastic packaging material.
